Scrubbing your deck with soaps and special cleaners can wear away more than a millimetre of soft grain from your deck every year leaving you with a very ridged surface in just a few years, these troughs then serve to retain more dirt and moisture helping the growth of black mildew. Using SEMCO teak sealer (even on a worn deck) will greatly reduce the need for future cleaning and scrubbing giving your deck many more years of service.

With modern boat builders putting on thinner teak decks to keep down build costs and quite rightly reduce the use of teak trees it is more and more necessary to protect your deck, be it old or new.
